Wimborne First School Prospectus
Raising the standard ... To read the full O fsted report, there is a link through the school website or you can go straight to www.ofsted.gov.uk. How high are Wimborne First School & Nursery Standards? In the first school setting, national testing happens in Year 1 and Year 2. In Year 1 the children will take part in a phonics screening check. At the end of Year 2, the children will take part in national curriculum assessments in each of the core areas English, Mathematics and Science. The overall results are based on teacher assessment, not just the test outcome. In Year 2, teachers will assess whether a child has met the expected standard or has progressed further and is working at greater depth within the expected standard. In Year 1, 3 and 4 children will be assessed against Age Related Expectations and whether they are applying this knowledge and working at greater depth. Parent workshops are held in the weeks prior to these tests to inform parents of the process and expectations. The tables below illustrates Wimborne First School & Nursery’s performance in 2017 in comparison to Dorset and/or nationally. Foundation Stage There are seven areas of learning and development that shape the curriculum of WFS’s Reception classes. All areas of learning and development are important and inter- connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. These three areas, the prime areas, are: • communication and language • physical development • personal, social and emotional development As a school we also support children in four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are: • literacy • mathematics • understanding the world • expressive arts and design At the end of Reception, the children are assessed in all of these areas, of which there are 12 assessment scales. Children who achieve the expected standard against these scales are recorded as making a Good Level of Development (GLD). GLD – A good level of development = expected in all 12 scales Phonics Check 2017 2018 2019 SCHOOL 90 90 98 NATIONAL 81 82 82 Reading 2019 at ARE 2019 at GDS SCHOOL 81 24 NATIONAL 75 25 Writing 2019 at ARE 2019 at GDS SCHOOL 79 18 NATIONAL 69 15 Mathematics 2019 at ARE 2019 at GDS SCHOOL 84 21 NATIONAL 76 22 2017 GLD SCHOOL 2017 GLD NATIONAL 78 80 Year 1 % of children achieving the standard Year 2 ARE = working at the expected standard GDS = working with greater depth at the expected standard. 12
