Wimborne First School Prospectus
Physical Education Fairness, respect and teamwork are among the many values that we teach our pupils through our Physical Education curriculum. We believe that every child should be inspired to enjoy PE and Sport, and to develop the knowledge and understanding of health and fitness in order to lead a healthy lifestyle. Our broad and balanced curriculum gives our children the opportunity to work individually, with a partner and as a group to learn the skills and tactics required when progressing onto playing small sided team games, such as tag-rugby, football and netball. Creativity skills are fostered through learning in dance, gymnastics and movement. We hold an annual Sports Day during the summer term which is run like a mini-Olympics - the events include both individual races and team games which allows all our pupils to enjoy participating in Sport. Throughout the year, our Key Stage 2 pupils get opportunities to participate in competitions between schools and we are frequently visited by specialist coaches which further inspire our children. We have a range of after school Sports Clubs including dance, gym, football, tennis, netball, tikondo and marshall arts. Music We like to inspire pupils to develop a love of music and offer many opportunities for them to become young musicians. Our teaching helps increase self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement through listening, composing, appraising, performing, singing and playing various instruments. Music lessons are available to all children in school. These lessons are provided by an experienced music teacher from the Dorset Music Service. Children can choose from Guitar, Drums, Woodwind, Brass and Piano lessons. Lessons are booked and paid for on a termly basis. If your child is interested in learning a musical instrument, please contact the school office. Children in Year 3 receive free instrumental tuition and the opportunity to learn an instrument as a whole class and proudly present an end-of-year performance for their family and friends. These lessons are provided by an experienced music teacher from the Dorset Music Service. The children relish the chance to learn with a professional musician and those that have shown a real dedication to learning their instrument are offered further free instrumental tuition for two terms. We also offer extra-curriculum music opportunities through our teacher led choir and recorder clubs. 11
